Recently I received some questions by email about an odd situation. A couple readers were asking me about a sequence of personal prophecies that seemed to stall out in midstream. Several events played out very accurately in their real lives but then suddenly, everything seemed to just come to an abrupt halt, leaving the remaining events in suspended animation.
No pun intended here but the timing of those emails, plus a few others in the last several weeks were oddly “coincidental” with my own personal search for better clues to discern prophetic timing. In the process of my replying to these readers, some new insights came to me that I think will help you get a better understanding of prophetic gaps should you find yourself in one of these also.
In case you haven’t noticed, I’m sort of into the musical themes lately. A few years ago I heard a teaching that dealt with the timing gaps in Bible prophecy. What stood out to me was how there is an intriguing parallel between music and prophecy. This was particularly interesting to me because music has been a big part of my family for several generations.
If you’ve ever learned to play any instrument, particularly a string, brass or woodwind, you’ve learned that in written sheet music there is something called a “rest”. This rest is a brief period when some or all of the instruments stop playing, often for dramatic effect. The interesting thing is that although the rest may be a period of silence, it is that silence that is actually part of the music. In fact, if it was not for that rest, the entire character of that piece would be completely different!
This topic of music is just like my articles on technology parallels with the spirit realm – music also has many direct parallels with prophetic matters. We even see in the Bible how at times, certain prophets called for music to be played in order for a prophecy to be given. Here’s one prominent example with Elisha in 2 Kings 3:15-16. It can’t be overlooked that music is all over the Bible, not just in the Psalms! But our focus here is on the way the structure and arrangement of music has parallels with the timelines of prophecy.
Bible Prophecy Gaps
Let’s first take a look at gaps in Bible prophecy and see what we find in terms of an example we can use as our foundation. Once we’ve established a Biblical precedent, we will move on to how this may relate on a personal level.
One of the most profound examples of a prophetic gap is the one found in perhaps the most significant prophecy in the entire Bible. I’m referring here to the “70 weeks prophecy” in Daniel 9:24-27 which tells the both exact date that the Messiah would appear in the temple on “Palm Sunday” and then goes on to foretell the second coming of that same Messiah later on. What we want to focus on here are the gaps in that prophecy – there are actually two of them.
“Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.
Daniel 9:24 (NKJV)
This prophecy given to Daniel speaks of two separate periods of time referred to in terms of a series of “weeks“. In Hebrew culture, there are weeks of years (7), just like we in English speaking countries have decades of years (10). The prophecy first speaks of a period of 7 weeks, followed by a period of 62 weeks, with a gap in between. This first gap turns out to be the 70-year period where Israel was taken into captivity in Babylon. (Jeremiah 29:10-14) After that, there is a second gap that comes later between the 69th and 70th week.
It is that second gap that has lasted now for 2,000 years since the first coming of Jesus. That last “week” is reserved for the time known as the 7-year tribulation during the reign of the antichrist (Daniel 9:27). Here’s the important part regarding both of these gaps…the reason for both is that during those two periods of “rest”, Israel was outside of God’s plan and because of that, God stopped counting on His prophetic calendar. Therefore, the entire movement of this 70 week prophecy (490 years total) had come to a halt twice because of Israel’s disobedience!
This might be a good time to insert another intriguing insight here that I observed about two decades ago. On the topic of parallels…there is often a connection between musical skill and mathematical aptitude. That’s very interesting here in our context because when you start looking at prophetic timing, you often have to do some math to understand what’s going on. Going back to the above prophecy, I need to refer again to a man who has the kind of aptitude to do the math necessary to understand the astounding precision of that prophecy.
“The commandment to restore and build Jerusalem was given by Artaxerxes Longimanus on March 14, 445 B.C….When we examine the period between March 14, 445 B.C. and April 6, 32 A.D., and correct for leap years, we discover that it is 173,880 days exactly, to the very day!”
– Dr Chuck Missler, The Precision of Prophecy, Daniels 70 Weeks
There you have it – this Daniel 9:24 prophecy was so exact, because God required His chosen elect people to know the exact time of the visitation of their Messiah! This was such a big deal that, when they did not, Jesus specifically said that because Israel missed their visitation, they were going to come under extreme judgment. Those familiar with history know how that judgment was carried out in 70 AD. Timing is extremely important when dealing with God’s plan and calling in your life!
and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Luke 19:44 (NKJV)
Personal note: I mostly avoid end times prophecy discussions online because of the rise of pride and arguing that often happens with unfortunately too many people (that also used to be me at one time).
Personal Prophecy Gaps
Ok, so with that as a brief Biblical foundation for prophetic gaps, let’s now bring this back to a personal level. What if, like the emails I received above, you also have a gap in a prophecy about your own life. Suppose you were told something significant was going to happen, but then a period of total silence arrives and you have no idea what to do. This one rings a bell personally with me because I also had a long gap in my own life right after receiving a huge business prophecy.
In the above Biblical example, we have a gap that is due to a negative series of circumstances. But not all gaps are due to a negative reason. In your own life, the most likely reason for a gap in a personal prophecy is due to a period of character transformation. If we look at other Biblical gaps, we could examine the life of King David and note how long he waited to step into his office after he had been anointed king – many years!
Although many negative circumstances arose during his waiting years, it was not necessarily because he did anything wrong that he had to wait. David’s waiting period was about character development. Same thing again for Moses although part of his delay involved the murder of an Egyptian followed by a period of exile in the wilderness. So we can see that a waiting period – just like a musical rest – can all be part of God’s plan. It does not necessarily mean you did anything wrong if you have had to endure an awkward and unexplainable prophetic gap in your life.
Just like David and Moses, you may very likely be in God’s “processing time” while you await those things you were told would happen, especially regarding your calling. If you are not familiar with how God processes a person for a higher calling, you must read my article on a personal wilderness – that is what I learned during my own experience going through a horrible and extremely challenging situation where God began developing my faith and character so I could step into my own higher calling.
Indirect Means of Discerning Timing?
So…if timing is so important, and most of us have no idea when certain things are going to happen in our lives, what are some keys to discerning this in our life? From studying my own dreams and watching events in my life play out, I believe I’ve found that there are often indirect ways to determine the timing of prophetic matters. If you don’t have a clear and direct indication of some type about the time factor, then you can sometimes infer it using a “backdoor” method.
Let me use a recent example in my own life and see if this helps explain what I’m trying to say here. Since late 2016, I’ve been getting repeated dreams and visions of myself making a geographic relocation so that I can move on in my life and calling. But my problem arose after many of these indications had piled up but still nothing was happening! Finally after many months went by, I finally began to notice something. Check this out…
Dream Series Examples
The first dream about my relocation was a brief flash image of my personal belongings in the literal bathroom of the house where I live now all gone and in place of them, a store receipt was on the countertop. In the next dream, I saw myself packing up dress shirts in a suit bag (luggage type). After this, another dream where I saw a pile of my belongings in the basement suddenly all gone.
After many weeks went by and I still had not moved, I began to get a little disturbed. But then I noticed something. In the middle of those above dreams, I also had two more dreams, again like flash images.
The first was of me lighting off fireworks in the backyard behind the house where I’ve lived. Then I saw a large glass full of ice and iced tea was being poured into it. At first I wasn’t quite sure what was going on except that the glass of iced tea was my first clue that I was getting a timing indicator for the summer (right now while writing this article).
After considering all these above, I began to realize I that had already been given another timing indicator in the first series above with the dream of packing the dress shirts. That dream was an indication of my traveling to a major event in August in Detroit where I would need those exact shirts. Then I realized that the fireworks in the backyard meant I would still be in the same house on the Fourth of July. So that all told me that my relocation would be sometime after August.
Understanding these subtle clues became my personal revelation for how to discern the timing of events by indirect means. But the reason I even came to understand this was because I was active in this process. I did two things – I watched for new clues to give more insights and I kept praying and asking for more information.
Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.
Mark 13:33 (NKJV)
So putting this all together…we’ve seen how gaps in personal prophetic timelines have various Biblical precedents including the Daniel 70 weeks prophecy as well as the life of King David and Moses. I’ve given examples from my own life and revealed how it’s been possible to discern prophetic timing using indirect “backdoor” methods.
Now it’s your turn! Use these insights and consider how any gaps in your own life may be a deliberate part of God’s plan or maybe you have issues that need to be worked out before you can move on to what God has already told you will happen.
Dreams are not automatic prophecies – we must do our part to make them happen in real life!
Delays and prophetic gaps are normal and do not necessarily mean anything is wrong.
Ask God persistently and deliberately until He begins to reveal more clues to shed light on what’s going on in your personal circumstances. These may be very subtle and require you to increase your ability to sense God’s personal communications with you. One thing for sure, most likely God has already been giving you answers but they have not yet been revealed to you.
