Do you normally have dreams somewhat regularly but suddenly it seems like they all shut down? Or maybe you rarely ever remember having a dream and don’t quite understand why? I’ve been in both situations myself and from experience, there are some possible reasons for either long or short-term lack of dreams.
If you’d like to fix this situation, I’ll give a few potential solutions here for how you can get back on track to hearing from God in this realm of nighttime parables. I’m going to address this from both the perspectives of those who don’t understand that God speaks in dreams as well as those who do.
Valuable Source of Communication
Let me briefly start with the basics for those who may not know this… God has many ways of speaking to us. Most of my life, I didn’t know that. I spent 40 years almost completely unaware of the supernatural realm, including this unusual realm of dreams. That means I lived all those years with zero knowledge at all about how God regularly gives us guidance, advice, correction, wisdom and insight on an infinite number of topics very relevant to our personal life. I struggled through all those years pretty much having to make all my decisions on my own, not knowing if God had a plan at all and if it was (probably!) better than what I had come up with.
If we don’t have regular dreams, we are going to bed every single night losing an extremely valuable opportunity to find out what God may want to say to us. This is like wasting one third of our life doing nothing when instead we could be gaining all sorts of valuable supernatural insights. God created all things and He knows everything – past, present and future. For us to go through life like I did, without even a hint that He might want to help me out is pretty sad.
Fortunately, back around 2011, all that changed when God began revealing to me in very vivid dreams that He was definitely using these to give me messages. Fast forward to today, I’ve now lived the last several years of my life making the understanding these dreams a top priority. In the process, I’ve learned a ton about the God who gives them and what He has to say to me in many aspects of my life. One of the most important things He has been revealing to me is – why I am here and what His plan is for me!
Ok, so that’s enough for a brief intro. If you want to know more about my own journey in understanding dreams, go back and read all my blog posts here. The vast majority of the articles I’ve written on this website are on the topic of dreams and their interpretation using Biblical methods. But now, I want to say a few things about why you might not be having dreams and some ways to fix that.
Knowledge: The Starting Point
From personal experience, the reason I spent 40 years of my life not remembering very many dreams was because I was never told that God uses them to communicate with us. Although I was a regular attender of lots of different churches all those years, not one time did anyone (pastor, priest or congregation member) ever say anything about God speaking to us through dreams. Because I had no knowledge, I didn’t know enough to pay any attention to what messages may have been contained in my dreams.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…
Hosea 4:6a (NKJV)
We miss out on a ton of opportunities by our lack of understanding of God and His word as it is written in the 66 books of the Bible. I often wonder, had I not been mostly Biblically illiterate for 40 years, how much different and infinitely better would my life have been?! Believe me, it would have been very different. I’ll save the stories for another day but I could have saved myself a ton of problems if I had known God wanted to speak to me using dreams and many other avenues.
- Reason #1 for lack of dreams can be lack of knowledge!
- Solution #1 – you must understand that God speaks in highly symbolic dreams in the same manner as Jesus spoke in parables.
Honor: The Key That Unlocks Many Doors
Honor is a very big topic in the Bible and unfortunately, it is not taught very well in many churches. Honor and fear of the Lord go hand in hand. We cannot honor God and have a careless attitude about Him. This is not just some “Old Testament concept”. No – it is 100% relevant for us right now, today!
“A son honors his father, And a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence?
Malachi 1:6a (NKJV)
When we honor the fact that God speaks to us in dreams, we show Him that we value His communication with us, even if we don’t necessarily understand everything in them at first.
Honoring dreams means that we don’t treat them as if they are total nonsense and dismiss them. When you get a dream, write it down as soon as you wake up. Dreams are often fleeting – if you don’t write them down, they will begin to vanish like water evaporating in a desert. But something odd happens when you do write them down – you remember them and, at a level of detail that would not have otherwise been retained.
Take the time to study dreams using proper Biblical methods. Putting effort into learning what God is saying shows Him that you are honoring Him and His method of communicating with you in what probably seems like a strange way. Many people have “religious” attitudes where they display knee-jerk reactions and throw out anything that is “too weird” for them. This kind of narrow mindedness will kill most of what God has for you – not just in this realm of dreams.
But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”
James 4:6 (NKJV)
Being humble and acknowledging that you don’t know everything, and keeping an open mind, will cause God to draw near to you and show you favor. I speak from experience – when I was in those 40 years of a spiritual desert, I was somewhat arrogant and threw out a few things that didn’t line up with what I thought was “Biblical”. Do yourself a favor and don’t exalt yourself as the “Bible answer man” who knows everything and always has an immediate split-second, hip-shooting answer for everything (aka: Pharisee).
- Reason #2 for lack of dreams can be lack of honoring them as God’s messages to you.
- Solution #2 – begin now to put a high value on your dreams, even if you don’t understand them all just yet.
Don’t Accept Status Quo: Ask, Ask, Ask!
When I finally began to learn how God speaks in symbolic dreams, one of the first thoughts I had was – how can I get more of them?! It seemed like weeks would go by with only one dream. This began to bother me so I started asking God to give me more dreams. It took a while and I kept asking but one day, it was like someone turned on the faucet and I’ve been getting lots of dreams regularly ever since – often several each night.
Just like with everything else regarding our faith – we have a pretty big clue in the Bible about one reason we often don’t have things we want. We are required to go after God and act like we don’t want to stay stuck in status quo. Just look around at all those who call themselves “Christians” and see what they’ve settled for in this lifetime. It’s pretty pathetic. I don’t like being limited by what I see (or not) happening around me.
You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.
James 4:2 (NKJV)
- Reason #3 for lack of dreams can be you’re not asking for them.
- Solution #3 – ask and continue asking until you are getting regular and frequent dreams.
Spiritual Hindrances: Demonic Attacks, Doubt & Unbelief
Let’s shift a little here and suppose that you understand all I’m saying above and you do know a few things about dreams as messages from God. But despite that, you’re suddenly having a dry spell and it’s been a week or more and you’ve had nothing that you can remember. Ok yes, I’ve been there myself!
As a personal admission, I’ve had a few times when my normal ‘many dreams per week’ have completely shut down. There have been several times when I had demonic attacks of negativity that caused doubt, unbelief, confusion and even frustration, and anger at some of the circumstances going on in my life. Some of this was probably demonic in origin and some was probably my own strongholds of various character flaws.
Most of the time, it seems that God will show me in advance that negative circumstances are coming and they are either due to a demonic attack or a character flaw that is rising up again and hindering my progress. When everything is going fine and suddenly I’m getting very negative dreams, I have to admit, I really don’t like that! Who likes bad news on a good day?!
So…if a lack of dreams is because of spiritual hindrances, I’ve learned that restarting them can require getting a bad attitude fixed if I’ve gotten into negativity, impatience or doubt and unbelief. Having faith and a positive attitude is really critical!
If you’re having a struggle with any of this as I have many times, it’s probably a stronghold or an iniquity that has been passed down many generations to you. That’s a big topic for another day but suffice it to say for now, getting rid of these requires going through a process where God reveals and delivers us from them piece by piece. It does not usually happen overnight.
Once, when I was having a major setback, I came across the verse below and it hit the bullseye with me. Turning back from faith in God and what He has told us is a really bad idea. Been there, done that. Nothing good ever comes from that.
Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.”
Hebrews 10:38 (NKJV)
- Reason #4 for lack of dreams may be a faith crisis, whether due to demonic attacks or character flaws.
- Solution #4 – pray to scatter and cancel all demonic activity and/or ask God to help us clean up any areas of weakness in our faith and character and help us turn back in the right direction.
Go Back to What God Already Said
Another personal observation – one way to restart dreams can be to go back to what God already said at some point in the past. Many times, I will get insights or instructions in dreams about situations that are weeks or months into the future. If I’m suddenly not getting any dreams right now, it can be that God already told me what I need to know a few weeks or months ago. In that case, I may just need to go back and read my dream journal to get the answer.
I’ve also noticed times when God showed me something in advance and then it seems like He waits for me to figure out what’s going on. Silence in that case, is just to give me enough personal space and time to catch on. Think of it like this – what if God just kept talking to you nonstop and never gave you a chance to stop and think about what He said and then apply it to your life? That would not be very helpful! We are human and can only handle so many things at once – sometimes, His temporary silence is actually doing us a favor.
By keeping a dream journal, you can look back to see what insights or instructions you were already given. Did He show you in advance what’s happening right now in your personal circumstances? Or did He give you an instruction that you need to take action on but you may not have yet? Either way – go back to all previous dreams and if it looks like you missed something, start taking steps right now based on what you were already given. It may be that’s all you need to do to get back on the right track.
- Reason #5 for lack of dreams can be due to forgetting, neglecting or not applying what God already said.
- Solution #5 – go back to previous dreams and see if the answer is in there, then take action on it.
Summary & Action
This article is by far not the all-inclusive list of reasons and solutions for a lack of dreams, but it is a pretty good start. If you’ve never been one to have many dreams, these ideas above should help you get on the road to becoming a regular dreamer. If you’re a more seasoned dreamer like myself but you’re in a dry spell, what I’ve written above should get you back on track.
Everything here has come from my own personal experience and has worked for me. Believe me, I’m nothing too unusual – what works for me should work just the same for you. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below or post them on my social media sites – thank you for reading!
