Just recently, I was asked by email about why God would show us literal death in dreams. It’s been more than a year since I wrote my last blog on death dreams and I’ve been wanting to write a new one. This is the perfect opportunity now because it’s a very common question. In the last couple years, I’ve learned a lot about the purpose and correct response to such dreams.
Death dreams are something you will almost certainly have at some point and it pays now to understand a few of the basics. By the time you finish this, I hope much of the possible confusion and misunderstandings about this type of dream will be cleared up. At the end, I’ll show you where you can get much more teaching on this subject and where I learned most of this myself.
Literal vs Symbolic Dreams
Before I get into the main content, I need to restate that not all death dreams are literal. Death means the ending of life, but symbolically, it can mean the ending of a chapter in life. Death can also mean symbolically the bringing an end to the works of the flesh – the human nature – those things that are against God’s law and standards of conduct.
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Colossians 3:5 (NKJV)
If you see someone dead in a dream but no one is showing any emotion and it just does not have any feeling of literal death, you should consider it to be symbolic. That means there is something about that person’s life that is going to die and, the result of that will be that something new will begin.
If you see someone dead or being killed and you get a sense that it looks very real and there is not any symbolism in the dream – you should consider this a literal warning of death. Symbolic dreams have details that are very out of place in real life – things that you just would never see. Literal dreams on the other hand, are more or less an exact representation of a real life event without any obvious symbolism.
Pay attention to the feeling you get in the dream – this will help clarify if the death is literal or symbolic. Death carries a feeling with it – often that includes fear and emptiness for those who do not have eternal life through the forgiveness of their sin by Jesus’ death on the cross. If that feeling is in the dream, it can be a clear sign that the death is literal, not symbolic.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John 3:16 (NKJV)
Ok, so now with those basics out of the way, here are the four main reasons why God would show you a literal death in a dream – and what you should do about it.
#1 – Not Everything That Happens is God’s Plan
The first reason why God would show you literal death in a dream is that not all deaths are God’s plan. Here is a principle that covers many types of dreams and life circumstances. God often shows us something with the expectation that we will get involved and make a decision whether or not that thing should happen. If God shows you a literal dream of death and you do nothing about it, the death will happen exactly as He showed you.
Here’s one of several examples in the Bible where God sent a message through a prophet about a literal death and it was stopped. Hezekiah was told that he was about to die, but he prayed and asked God that he would be allowed to live longer.
“Go and tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will add to your days fifteen years.
Isaiah 38:5 (NKJV)
Another example – God was going to kill the Israelites after they had just made a golden calf and worshipped it but Moses intervened and God changed His mind (Exodus 32). God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah but Abraham intervened to at least get a few people out first (Genesis 18). So God’s plan is not always death – we have to change our thinking and our way of relating to God and not accept things saying “it was God’s will”. Many times it is NOT God’s will that a person should die but if we don’t know any better, many things will happen while we sit by in ignorance and passivity.
#2 – Everyone Has A Set Time Frame For Life – Be Prepared
The second reason God may show us literal death in a dream is because every one of us has an appointment when our time here is finished. We don’t really know when that is but see the two verses below – the second one is a caveat to the first. Generally speaking, God’s plan for everyone is long life (of course exceptions apply). It is not our job to decide for a person if it was their time or not – this is why we always must ask God for wisdom and do our part to intervene and not make assumptions.
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
Hebrews 9:27 (NKJV)
With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”
Psalm 91:16 (NKJV)
But if it is God’s plan that a person dies, then He will show us this so that we can be prepared in advance for the event. Some things that God shows us are just going to happen and He may give us a chance to do certain things so will be we ready for what is coming. This shows how God is personally involved with us and His desire toward us is good. If it’s the time for a person to go, there may be many things we should do – including to be emotionally prepared before time.
#3 – God Enacts Judgment (like it or not)
The third reason for a literal death in a dream can be the result of judgment against a person. There are reasons why God would bring about the end of a person prematurely. Unfortunately, many churches are completely ignorant on this. It is a Biblical fact that God does judge people and nations and does kill them at times. Go back to Sodom and Gomorrah again; also note that Ananias and Sapphira were judged and killed by God (Acts 5). This shows God’s character is THE SAME in both the Old Testament and New.
Here’s a big one – premature death can be from lack of honoring parents (Mark 7:10 plus many more verses). Long life is connected to “honor your father and mother” – some people have curses over their heads for not obeying this command and many of them die early. This is particularly true in the inner cities. But – if or when a person repents, God may reverse His plan to end their life prematurely.
If we deny that God kills people because of His judgment against them, we deny very large swaths of the Bible. Churches that reject this and teach the opposite are lying and causing people to end up in these situations because they refuse to acknowledge the “unpleasant” side of God. Those who are immature (spiritual babies) can’t handle anything that isn’t “nice” to their ears so they only tolerate hearing what makes them feel good and doesn’t offend their weak minds (don’t get me started…)
But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!
Luke 12:5 (NKJV)
Note the below passage was a judgment against Aaron for speaking against Moses when he decided along with Miriam that they were equal to Moses. If you read that entire passage, you’ll see that immediately after they spoke against Moses, God called them to a meeting and pronounced a judgment on them for this act of rebellion. Remember this next time you decide to speak against a man or woman that God established in spiritual authority – whether you like them or not.
and strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son; for Aaron shall be gathered to his people and die there.”
Numbers 20:26 (NKJV)
#4 – The Devil Wants You Dead
The fourth reason (if you made it past that third one) is that God will show you the devil’s plan to kill someone. It can be through an accident or murder or sickness. This is again where we must intervene. But there is a very important key to what the correct response must be. Here it is…
Not all deaths can be prevented by prayer. Sometimes you must take certain actions. A couple years ago, someone I know was warned in a dream they were going to die in a car accident because of sending text messages. The person had to stop doing this immediately; because she stopped, she is alive today. If this person had continued to send text messages while driving but just prayed against death, they would be dead today.
Sometimes we must take practical actions immediately to prevent a premature death. Ask God for wisdom and strategy as a response to this kind of dream. Maybe you can pray and cancel it, maybe you can’t. In some cases, prayer can cancel a death but don’t assume that. This is where you must understand the kingdom message and your position as a king (see my kingdom category blogs for more about that).
Credits & Product Recommendations
Ok – these are four of the top reasons why God would show you a literal death in a dream. Much of what I’ve written here comes directly from the products below that I also have listed on my store page. In those teachings is much more that I chose not to include here but you must know in order to properly handle dreams of this type.
Let me give you a hint – the “office of the dreamer” carries with it the ability to stop certain things from happening, including premature death. If you don’t know what a “dream officer” is, you need these teachings. Dreamers are a kingdom position (not church) and they carry an authority that goes way beyond the realm of the church.
By now you already know I am part time on the staff at Joshua Media Ministries International and in many of my blogs, I refer to products and teachings that can only be found there by Apostle David E. Taylor. In one of the audio teachings below, you will hear the full testimony about the woman and the text messaging along with another woman who lost her husband because he refused to obey the warnings in dreams to stop riding a motorcycle.
Remember this – God did not put us here to be passive and just let things happen!! He originally created us to have dominion over everything in the earth realm but hardly anyone teaches this (see that sonship blog I posted recently). We are in training to be kings with authority and dominion over everything – now – not some future date. The topic of this blog here is only one way that our kingship and sonship applies. I hope this has cleared up many of the questions you might have on this topic and I look forward to hearing from you!
